Emergency Plumberin Stockport

Stockport plumber needed today? Expert help for SK postcodes

Stockport is one of Greater Manchester's most historically rich boroughs, with a housing stock that ranges from Victorian terraces in the town centre to large Edwardian semis in Heaton Moor and modern detached houses in Bramhall. The borough sits in a notably hard water zone — SK postcode water has among the highest calcium content in Greater Manchester, meaning boilers and cylinders here scale up faster than almost anywhere else in the region. We always recommend a scale reducer or water softener with any new installation in SK postcodes. Our engineers know the tight access challenges in Stockport's older terraces and carry specialist tools for awkward flue runs.

Burst pipe? Boiler gone? No hot water? When something goes wrong, you need someone there fast. We respond 24/7 across Stockport — usually within 55 minutes. Call-out rate confirmed upfront. Fixed price agreed before work starts. Call now or tap WhatsApp for a quote.

Emergency Guidance

What To Do Right Now

While you wait for us to arrive, these steps can limit damage and keep your household safe. Stay calm — most emergencies look worse than they are.

Burst Pipe

  1. Locate and turn off the stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink or where the water main enters the property.
  2. Turn on all cold taps to drain the remaining water from the pipes.
  3. Switch off the boiler and central heating to avoid drawing cold air through the system.
  4. Call us — we'll be on our way.

Boiler Not Working / No Heat

  1. Check the pressure gauge — it should read between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. If it's below that, the boiler may need re-pressurising.
  2. Reset the boiler once using the reset button (refer to your manual). If it fires then locks out again, stop — there's a fault that needs a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. Check whether the condensate pipe (the plastic pipe that exits outside) is frozen — in winter this is a common cause of lockout.
  4. If you smell gas: do NOT reset the boiler. Evacuate and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Leaking Radiator Valve

  1. Place a towel or container under the valve immediately to catch drips.
  2. Turn off the lockshield valve (the plastic-capped valve) and the wheelhead valve (the hand valve) on either side of the radiator — this isolates it.
  3. If the gland nut is weeping, you can apply a couple of wraps of PTFE tape and hand-tighten. Do not over-tighten.
  4. Call us to replace the valve properly.

Blocked Drain or Toilet

  1. Use a proper cup plunger — place it over the outlet, push down firmly, and pull sharply several times.
  2. Do not use chemical drain cleaner if the blockage is total. It won't clear a solid blockage and makes our job significantly harder.
  3. If the toilet is at risk of overflowing, lift the cistern lid and push the flap down to stop more water entering the bowl.
  4. Call us — we carry professional drain rods and jetting equipment.

No Hot Water (Cylinder / Tank System)

  1. Check the immersion heater switch is on (usually a red switch near the hot water cylinder).
  2. Check the cylinder's thermostat — if it has tripped due to overheating, press the reset button on the thermostat body.
  3. Check your programmer or timer — it may have lost its settings after a power cut.
  4. If none of the above resolves it, call us for a same-day diagnosis.

Gas Smell — Act Immediately

  1. Do NOT operate any electrical switches — do not turn lights on or off, do not press any appliance buttons.
  2. Open windows and doors to ventilate the property.
  3. Evacuate everyone from the building immediately.
  4. Once outside, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 — available 24 hours.
  5. Do not re-enter until a Gas Safe engineer has declared it safe.

Local Knowledge

Common Plumbing & Heating Problems in Stockport

Our engineers see these issues regularly in SK1-SK8 properties. Understanding the area lets us diagnose and fix problems faster than an engineer visiting for the first time.

Stockport sits in a hard water zone — limescale rapidly furs up boiler heat exchangers and shower heads, shortening appliance life

Older Victorian terraces in SK1–SK3 frequently have original lead or iron pipework that corrodes and causes low water pressure

Back-to-back and through-terrace layouts make boiler flue routing difficult and require experienced engineers to achieve Building Regs compliance
